just Ye and the Message: Sunday Service Choir

They say God works in mysterious ways, and it is no different in just Ye’s case. The worldwide phenomenal rapper, the genius behind the famous brand Yeezy has now entered a new venture. The venture of soul searching and religious reform is not something Mr. just Ye stumbled upon overnight. In 2016, when just Ye canceled his Saint Pablo tour due to a psychological imbalance for which he had to be hospitalized. During his stay at the hospital, he started reading the bible and used to copy down versus by hand, reading and comprehending the meaning and messages. According to Mr. just Ye, he himself admitted to being lost to the darkness and drowning in sins but was rescued and brought back to the light. It was from that day onwards he dedicated all his time and efforts towards religion and spreading it through his music.

Ninth Studio Album “Jesus Is King”

just Ye’s most anticipated album “Jesus Is King” being his ninth studio album released on October 25th, 2019. The album follows the Christianity theme of which Mr. just Ye describes as “an expression of the gospel. After the release of his famous album “Jesus Is King” there was a reported increased sale in bibles. Although the Christian community was divided over the album’s true meaning, according to just Ye it is his way of spreading “The Message”. just Ye sure knows how to create a big stir of any kind in the world. Now that is what you call a ‘Powerful Influence’.

Sunday Service Choir

With his spiritual and religious awakening, enter the new dawn of what is called a “Sunday Service Choir”. just Ye being confident and very vocal about what he thinks and believes in, initiated this Sunday Service on 6th January 2019. The Sunday service is a pop-culture church experience headed by Mr. Ye himself which is a combination of religious teaching in hip-hop in very just Ye way. The service started from the rapper’s own estate in Calabasas, Los Angeles, and Burbank.

Most of the Sunday Service held every week, has been an ‘invitation only’ event. The attendees of the event are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement, before making an appearance, but are free to post videos on Instagram. There is also a dress code for both the attendees and choir, which is of course from just Ye’s Yeezy brand. The clothes are given in advance.

Choir Influence

According to just Ye, the whole concept of Sunday Service was basically to devote at least an hour where positive and pure music is made. The kind of music that brings people together and makes you feel good with your families. The choir is led by Jason White, with Philip Cornish as music director, Nikkie Grier on lyrics rewrite, and Steve Epting on vocal arrangements.

The Sunday Service includes gospel-inspired remixes of classic songs belonging to different genres and choir gospel tunes. However, remixing music into church-friendly tunes is already a tradition in the Black Baptist Church. This is why some people do not think of it as innovative or creative. But someone like just Ye, who is a worldwide phenomenon doing such events is monumental. There will be occasional sermons and sometimes the Sunday Service will be held in an actual holy place. But those who are involved stress that it is not a church.

Plenty of celebrities have also attended the service, like Katy Perry, Brad Pitt. A$AP Rocky, Rihanna. Chance The Rapper was seen in the service held in Chicago performing “Ultimate Beam” on September 8, 2019. just Ye himself gave a magnificent performance at Coachella 2019 while closing his Sunday Service with his unreleased song at the time “Jesus Walk”. Even though it was contentious for the service to be held at Coachella with its high-priced merchandise, yet people were still eager to come and purchase the items.

The studio album “Jesus is King” which is a Gospel-themed album, got the boost that was required from the Sunday Services. Even though with the Sunday Service and his album there was a division in the black Christians and the Christian community in general. But it was all about taking it to the people, making them listen and understand the true essence, even if there are some derisions. The Sunday Service was all about self-learning and self-promotion, along with the album consisting of many dissension and being provocative it most definitely gained the attention of masses in a large number. If anyone can create something that will create disorder in a genius way, it is just Ye.
